Collier & Lee County Water Restrictions

http://www.sfwmd.gov/curre/watshort/index_tips.html#inlee

As part of our mission to manage water and related resources, the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) routinely monitors conditions and -- if warranted, a water shortage declaration is made. SFWMD has placed water restrictions year-round throughout Southwest Florida. The Collier and Lee County governments, as well as the city municipalities within each county, have the option to place additional restrictions.

There is a great deal of variation among these local rules, so please check the information below for your county or city. Local governments enforce these restrictions.

Residents of all other counties should follow the SouthWest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) water restrictions, which restrict irrigation to TWO DAYS PER WEEK, before 10:00 a.m. or after 4:00 p.m.

General Tips On Conserving Water In Your Own Backyard

1) Water lawns only when they need it, and only when the restrictions in place for your area allow.

2) Watering in the early hours of the morning, or after 5 p.m. means more water goes to your landscape, and less water is lost to the wind or sun. Lawns and other plants benefit most from a deep watering of a single application of about 3/4 of an inch of water.

3) In the rainy season (mid May-October), lawns need only 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of water every 2-3 days. That means you can skip irrigating when rain does your watering for you! During the dry season (November-May), the average lawn only needs about an inch of water every 7 to 10 days.

4) Over-watering lawns means the grass will have shallow roots and be susceptible to diseases. It will need more fertilizer and more maintenance – costing YOU more money and more time.

5) Florida law requires rain sensors on all automated systems installed after May 1, 1991. But even if your system is older, getting a rain gauge/rain sensor for your sprinkler system is a VERY good investment, because it can turn off your system when nature has brought the rain your lawn needs.

6) Set your mower at its highest level, to allow grass blades to be about 3

inches long. The longer blades of grass develop deeper roots, and shade the soil so water is better retained.
