HOW TO HANDLE GROWTH

A panel of speakers will take up the issue of Hometown Democracy at a forum Wednesday presented by the Southwest Florida district of the Urban Land Institute. Under the Hometown Democracy proposal, changes to land use plans would have to be approved by a public vote. Supporters argue that growth is being poorly managed, and that this will give the public more control. Critics argue that changing land uses involves expertise and an array of considerations with which most voters aren’t familiar, and that it would in effect result in a growth moratorium. The forum will be 8 to 11 a.m. July 11 in the ballroom at Florida Gulf Coast University.
