Colleen Sugden and Joshua Menghini attended the
Riverwatch board meeting on July 11, 2007 and showed a video on the SolarBee
water circulation system for preventing blue-green algal blooms.
Colleen described the basic principles of the
system:
The SolarBee uses solar panels to power a pumping
system that draws water up through a column from deeper anoxic layers and
gently propels this water over the surface of the pond or reservoir using
special baffles.
This autonomous circulation system has two major
effects:
1.
Disruption of the surface layers habitat of
blue-green algae, interrupting their life cycle thus preventing their
proliferation.
2.
Bringing deeper, anoxic waters to the surface
and creating secondary circulation patterns that increase the oxygen content of
the water body, which in turn promotes a more balanced ecosystem better for
fish and other aquatic life.
