The July 19 meeting of the Southwest Florida
Watershed Council will feature Dr. Brian Boman, an
agricultural engineer with UF/IFAS (note bio below). The title of Dr. Boman’s
presentation is “Agricultural BMP Development and
Implementation in Florida”. Dr. Boman’s presentation will be
important to help the Watershed Council promote BMPs that may be funded under
the Northern Everglades Legislation and in the context of TMDLs for the
Caloosahatchee River. There will be time for questions and discussion. The
meeting is open to the public.
We will meet at our usual location at 2:00
PM at the Visitor and Convention Bureau in Ft. Myers at 12800 University
Drive and is the 6-story building in the southeast corner of the intersection of
Summerlin & College Parkway. We will be in Suite 325 on the 3rd floor. Park
on the third floor of the parking ramp.
Dr. Brian Boman - Biodata
UF/IFAS Indian River Research and Education Center
Dr. Brian Boman earned a Ph.D. in Agricultural & Irrigation Engineering from Utah State University and holds M.S. and B. S. degrees in Agricultural Engineering from Colorado State and North Dakota State Universities. He has worked as an engineer in private industry, as a consultant, as and engineer for the U.S. Department of Interior, and as a university research and extension engineer. Presently, he is a Professor of Agricultural Engineering at the University of Florida, Indian River Research and Education Center in Fort Pierce. He has been a leader in research programs associated with the design, operation, and maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems for citrus production. Recent work centers on environmental concerns related to agricultural production and he presently serves as the University of Florida, IFAS coordinator for developing and implementing best management practices to reduce impacts on Florida’s water resources. Other work includes characterizing runoff water from a variety of land use types and investigating effects of citrus water management and fertilization practices on surface water and groundwater quality, and managing citrus production with high salinity irrigation water.
Dr. Boman has written over 150 publications on
his work including book chapters, journal articles, refereed papers, extension
bulletins, and popular press articles. He is a member of the American
Society of Agricultural Engineers, International Society of Citriculture,
American Society of Civil Engineers, Florida State Horticultural Society,
Florida Irrigation Society, and Soil and Crop Science Society of Florida. From
1995 to 2005, Dr. Boman served as Associate Editor, Transactions of ASAE,
Soil and Water Division of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers.
He is a technical reviewer for several national and international journals.
He has also served as Secretary, Vice-Chair, and Chair of the Irrigation Water
Requirements Committee of the Irrigation and Drainage Division, American Soci
ety of Civil Engineers.
