Gov. Charlie Crist on Friday appointed Shannon A. Estenoz, a regional director for the National Parks Conservation Association, to the governing board of the South Florida Water Management District.

Estenoz, 39, of Plantation, formerly worked for the World Wildlife Fund as the Everglades program director and later as a senior policy adviser. She served on the Governor's Commission for the Everglades and on the Water Resources Advisory Commission.

If confirmed by the Florida Senate, Estenoz will succeed Miya Burt-Stewart. Crist had rescinded ex-Gov. Jeb Bush's decision to appoint Burt Stewart.

Estenoz, whose term would end March 1, 2010, earned an associate's degree at Florida Keys Community College and bachelor's degrees in civil engineering and international affairs at Florida State University.

She works as the National Parks Conservation Association's Sun Coast regional director. "We have an obligation to preserve our state's natural resources by protecting and strengthening the water supply in South Florida," Estenoz said in a statement. "I share Governor Crist's commitment to proactive planning and taking the necessary steps now to conserve the regional water supply, and am honored by this opportunity."

The South Florida Water Management District administers the plan set by the legislature to conserve, protect, manage, and control state waters including preservation of natural resources, fish and wildlife, and promoting recreational protection.
