Editorial: Don’t pump farm
water into Lake O
We’ve seen the vast problems caused by Lake Okeechobee releases into the
Caloosahatchee River and our estuaries.
Algal blooms and harm to our marine life caused by nutrient-rich waters from the
lake have enraged our political leaders and local citizens.
Now, the South Florida Water Management District is considering today allowing
the highly controversial, destructive and largely abandoned practice of pumping
farm water into the lake.
The reason: the drought, which has limited the supply of water for drinking and
irrigation.
Faced with this crisis, the district must act in the best interest of our
community’s environmental health and vote against pumping that water into the
lake.
