The scorching summer heat may affect more than just your outdoor activities. Experts say consumers may get even hotter under the collar, when they have to dig deeper into their wallets for certain fruits, vegetables and possibly beef if Florida's prolonged drought continues to parch crucial growing areas around Lake Okeechobee. According to Florida Farm Bureau Assistant Director, Charles Shinn, says this is because Florida is a major producer of fruits and vegetables. Crop losses have already topped $100 million this year and could become much worse next year. But according to Shinn, the crop that's suffered the most is cattle. While a few summer showers have offered some relief, Shinn says it's not nearly enough. Shinn adds water shortages remain critical around Lake Okeechobee, which is one of Florida's most prominent farming regions.
