Call to Action! | Water Quality

WATER RELEASE MUST BE STOPPED

Sanibel City Council voted unanimously to look into going to court to stop the release of fresh water from Lake Okeechobee down the Caloosahatchee River.

The issue is that South Florida Water Management District and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers control releases from the lake and The Corps is proceeding with flood control and making those operational decisions based on water levels in Lake Okeechobee. Pollution- and nutrient-laden freshwater releases from the lake have been blamed for a number of problems in the Caloosahatchee and its estuary, including algal blooms and the destruction of seagrass beds. Hurricane Wilma poured 10 inches of rain onto the Kissimmee Valley, which drains into the lake, the Corps of Engineers has been releasing water at 6,500 cubic feet per second down the Caloosahatchee as a flood-control measure. Forty percent of the water released from the lake flows down the Caloosahatchee; 36 percent goes south, and 24 percent flows down the St. Lucie River.

There are series of options for a possible lawsuit, including teaming up with other local governments to be presented to the attention of the council's Nov. 29 meeting.

Sanibel City Council calls on all residents, property owners and businesses of our region to add your personal voice to our call for action to the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to immediately cease the destruction of our water quality caused by the Lake Okeechobee water releases, which are killing our fishing and tourism industries.

IT IS OUR DUTY - PLEASE ACT NOW!

Contact our Elected and Appointed Officials to act now to address our water quality crisis and economic catastrophe that impacts us all.
